@itsmaggieperkins: We are ready to start thinking about adopting a dog 💚 we are looking for a very family oriented companion dog, medium and large. Milly was our perfect girl and she was a lab shepherd mix. We are not looking for working breeds as we don’t feel we can give them the lifestyle they are meant for. What dogs have been excellent family companions for your family? #largedogs #puppytiktok #dogsoftiktok #mediumdogs #familydogs
Go get yourself another Millie!! Black dogs at the shelter are always at risk! Most shelters will have weekend warrior programs or hiking buddy programs so you can get to know the dog before you chose. Please adopt another shelter Millie 🖤

My Great Pyrenees / Lab mix is the world's best dog. He is down for a hike but also only needs 2 short-ish walks a day to be satisfied. We don't have kids but he's great with the nieces and nephews - I realized he was great with kids when a toddler grabbed his jowls to pull herself up to stand and he just stood there patiently 😂

Our golden is considered a “show golden” and I would absolutely not consider her high energy. She is happy to take a 1-2 mile hike with us, but she’s also happy to snuggle on the couch and watch bravo. A good walk a day and she’s totally content. Amazing with kids.

I would be patient and check into foster based rescues who don’t focus a ton of their attention pulling euthanasia list dogs, and spend more time rescuing dogs that are more sound, stable, and safe. Puppies are wonderful, but also know that sometimes when adopting with children finding an adult dog that has lived safely with children is even better. Puppies can always be worked with to learn to live with kids, but at the end of the day genetics do play a role in that, and it’s always hard to know what you are going to really get with adopting a puppy until they are an adult. If you are anywhere near Indiana, I’d be happy to talk to you more about the dogs we have in my rescue and any future dogs we may have. I am confident we can find a child safe dog.

Coming from experience of rescuing dogs, I would only adopt a rescue dog with kids if it's from a solid foster based rescue. I would ask them on their recommendation for a good personality fit bc the breed matters less when it's an adult mutt who they have documented evidence of it living in a family with kids and cats. If you go the puppy route, look for a solid ethical breeder, labs and goldens seem like they would be perfect for you guys.

Golden retriever and labs are the same energy wise. Both will be insane until they’re about 3. lol if you decide to go rescue, you can absolutely find one that’s been fostered with kids where they match your lifestyle.

Bench labs and golden retrievers. You want to be looking into show dog breeders if you’re going the breeding route to avoid “working lines”. Be honest with what energy level you are looking for. Ensure the breeder you choose is ethical and temperament tests and health tests. If you’re leaning toward rescue I would only be looking at adult dogs (2-4yrs old). Genetics largely determine temperament and the rescue puppies are not “blank slates” they are question marks as to what they will be like as adults no matter how well you raise them.

Friends of ours just adopted through Joys of Living Assistance Dogs… basically dogs trained to be Assistance Dogs but for a variety of reasons they have some dogs that need a “career change” for whatever reasons. They got a beautiful golden retriever that is fully trained and wonderful. (and completely skipped the puppy stage) 🐶💕

We have a Great Pyrenees Poodle mix and she is the sweetest most amazing family dog. She is only 45 lbs. She is not super high energy. She is smart and loves snuggles. Great with my kids, they were 8 and 11 when we got her.

I’ve volunteered in rescue for > 5 years. Labs are number 1 but pitbulls and Dobermans are also great for school age kids and not high energy. Adopt from place that allows at least 1 meet and greet with the entire family and has been cat tested. Recommend puppy or under 1.

If you’re knowledgeable/capable, foster through a rescue. If they’re not the perfect fit for your family, you’ve given them a great temp home on their way to forever, and eventually (likely soon!) you’ll find a match that’s just perfect and foster fail. 🐶

As a walker/sitter I would never recommend a golden. Bernese Mountain dogs are my golden adjacent suggestion. My all around perfect family dog rec is a greyhound. However, your success with a rescue makes me feel like that’s really what you’ll end up with. Either way, best of luck 🖤

I would just follow all the shelters in your area on social media and wait for one that fits your criteria and has been observed to be good with kids and cats. We did this and ended up with a perfect dog for our family

We got a Flat-Coated Retriever because I could not trust myself to pick a reputable breeder in the sea of goldens and labs. Got everything the breed is and more. Biddable, natural water and people lovers, happy-go-lucky-puppy energy as they age, very biddable (just more repetition and patience), mild mannered and slightly cautious, lower prey drive. Breeders are few and far, kinda pricey, but worth it.

I got a mix recently a puppy. He is so calm. Half golden retriever, 1/4 border collie, 1/4 corgie and 1% lab. His demeanor is perfect

I know you said you aren’t interested in a Pyrenees but they are protective of their charges ie the kids. We had one for 11 years and he slept in our youngest kid’s room.. lot of hair but great family dog.

My friend fosters for, and has adopted her two dogs through, Forgotten Dogs Rescue here in WA. They often have litters of large mixed breed puppies! They seem to be pretty active on FB if you're over there!

Bernese Mountain Dog is a breed I've recently fell in love with for a family dog. Labs and Retrievers are high risk for cancer too early.

Golden retrievers can be lower energy especially if they are show line (vs field line) I would say labs are usually the most family friendly!
