The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ forbade the killing of women, children, the elderly, and other non-combatants. He prohibited mutilation, treachery, and the unnecessary destruction of homes and places of worship. The Qur'an commands, "Fight those who fight you, but do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not love the transgressors" (Qur'an 2:190), making it clear that war in Islam is never a license for cruelty or revenge. The first Caliph, Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, reinforced these principles when sending Muslim armies into battle. He instructed them: do not kill women, children, or the elderly; do not cut down fruit-bearing trees; do not destroy inhabited places; do not slaughter animals except for food; do not burn bees or damage nature unnecessarily; do not betray, steal, or violate treaties; and leave monks and worshippers in their places of worship.
