I’ve just finished a course in HFFAT as a part of my Quant Finance degree (Masters level). We ended up having to do a project where we deployed a strategy. We chose Polymarket. We made small wins, but were obviously swallowed by fees. Do you think theres an edge to get on prediction markets? Is it something you guys allocate capital to? Looking for inspiration for my Thesis + potential PhD

Fear mongering math is so annoying, it drives people away from the subject, and ignores the fact that its all based of logic, so anyone can build an intuition and become good at math

not always but a lot of times very intimidating math turns out to be way simpler once represented as code

I hate when people just show something from a field without context just to fearmonger, every symbol has a meaning in there has a meaning, and if something has a meaning it can be understood

I feel like on paper ‘complicated’ math is much simpler when breaken down onto code as well

I’m autistic and I’m fairly ignorant but I feel like that math I could learn if someone sat down with me and actually showed me. I’d forget a couple months later w no practice but idk looks interesting

Thanks for covering this, I understand the idea of adverse selection and the paper but i definitely could not understand the math behind it. Original paper was also around 30-40 pages

Comments here are vastly underplaying the work gone into developing the theory of optimal execution. Part of the difficulty is rendering this math and stochastic calculus into a form that can be easily followed and implemented. They haven’t put all that math and notation for the sake of it - it’s to be mathematically exact, accurate, and robust. Talking through the paper is far easier than deriving it, and does not mean that the work itself is simple.

Does any of this take into account What other competing market makers are quoting at that moment in time?

i was wondering if you would have an idea of what i should do next year for university, im currently stuck between data science or math/stats... what do you think would be best to get into the quantitative space?

Well lengthy expressions are not necesserily complicated, but really just lengthy. Take the 5th derivative of tan(x) and it’s a mess. Is it complicated? No. Its just some Kind of Dynamic equation which gets taylor expanded. However there are lengthy things that are also complicated, like the standard Model of particle physics

Yea making an avellaneda–stoikov model in python was really fun and cool to see how a market maker actually works

Have you ever looked into sports trading/modeling ? feels like it maps pretty closely (pricing under uncertainty, finding edge vs. a market-implied probability, CLV as a proxy). Do you think the same skillsets transfers well, or are there structural differences (liquidity, vig, sample size) that make it a different ? Thanks
