@hifi_deafie: Who has the final say, the hearing doctor or the Deaf patient? Follow for part 2 where I’ll share tips on how we can exercise our patient autonomy 🙌🏽 #disabilityrights #communicationdisability #accessibility #interpreting — (Video description: Leila, an Asian woman with long brown hair wearing a black tank top, sits by a white wall with a framed artwork of a typewriter with letters flying out of it) Transcript in comments
The office policy is valid because of liabilities but the issue is what can be solved when the interpreters don’t show up? Is it fair for us to reschedule our appointment because the interpreter didn’t show up? It’s still a barrier issue.

I agree with this 100% because service providers are legally responsible to make sure the communication is very clear.

WHAT… but if the patient prefers written communication or something else then that would mean the interpreter wasn’t the most effective communication? Wouldn’t it? I was certain you’d say the patient had the final say & I think they should

Fascinating & makes sense!Welcome to America indeed! 😂 Now I'm curious what made your eye dr implement this policy? Were they sued or did they have a bad experience? 👁️👃👁️

Wow - not great. So what can patients do? I guess if you have the luxury of being able to shop around for your healthcare providers you can find one who supports you as you find best. They have the final say legally but that means they can choose to go with your preference as the patient, at least that is how it seems to me!
