@thebeautydoctrine: Read the back 👀 I’m not pregnant. So why do I keep a prenatal in my multivitamin rotation? Because I don’t choose supplements based solely on the category printed on the front of the bottle. I look at the nutrient profile on the back. Prenatals are formulated for a period when nutritional demands increase dramatically. That often means a more comprehensive combination of nutrients like folate, choline, iodine, B vitamins, vitamin D, zinc, selenium and magnesium. But here’s what gets overlooked. Those nutrients don’t suddenly become important when you become pregnant. They’re involved in processes your body relies on every day. Folate supports DNA synthesis and cell division. Choline is important for cell membranes and neurotransmitter production. Iodine and selenium support normal thyroid function. B vitamins participate in energy metabolism and nervous system function. Zinc supports immune function, tissue repair and hundreds of enzymatic reactions. Vitamin D plays a role in bone, muscle and immune health. Magnesium is involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions. Pregnancy increases the demand for many of these nutrients. It doesn’t create the need for them. That’s why I occasionally rotate a well-formulated prenatal in place of my regular multivitamin. Notice I said rotate. I’m not taking a prenatal every day on top of a multivitamin and a cabinet full of overlapping supplements. More is not better, especially with nutrients like iodine, selenium, zinc, iron and fat-soluble vitamins. Your diet, medications, other supplements, life stage and ideally your labs should all be considered. The bigger lesson? Stop shopping supplements by the marketing on the front of the bottle.
