Muslims have served and fought in every major military conflict in United States history, dating back to before the country was officially founded. Historians and Department of Defense records document Muslim service members across the entire timeline of the U.S. military: The Revolutionary War (1775–1783): Records show several soldiers with Muslim names served in the Continental Army. Notable figures include Peter Salem, a hero of the Battle of Bunker Hill, as well as soldiers listed as Yusuf ben Ali and Bampett Muhamed. War of 1812: During British attacks on Georgia's Sapelo Island, Bilali Muhammad—an enslaved West African Muslim leader—led a group of 80 armed men to successfully defend the island. The American Civil War (1861–1865): Historical muster rolls identify nearly 300 soldiers with Muslim surnames who fought during the Civil War, mostly for the Union. Notable examples include Nicholas Said (a West African immigrant who enlisted in the 55th Massachusetts Colored Regiment) and Muhammad Kahn, an Afghan immigrant who fought for the Union Army. World Wars I and II: Thousands of Muslim Americans served in both World Wars. Following WWII, veteran Abdullah Igram successfully campaigned for Islam to be officially recognized on U.S. military dog tags. Vietnam War to the Present: Muslims fought in Vietnam, the Gulf War, and post-9/11 operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thousands of Muslim service members serve across all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. For a deeper dive into this history, watch Fighting for Freedom: The Little-Known Story of Muslims and the Civil War. This documentary segment from PBS explores how historians uncovered pension records and personal stories of Muslim immigrants and African Americans who fought in the Civil War.
