In the Soviet Union, pizza became our first real taste of foreign cuisine — but, naturally, we made it our own. After Sveta discovered a recipe for pizza in the Soviet magazine Rabotnitsa, we decided to experiment with whatever we had at home. Instead of traditional Italian ingredients, our giant square pizza was loaded with Bulgarian ketchup, Doktorskaya sausage, salty pickles, boiled eggs, sprats, and plenty of grated cheese. At first, I wasn't convinced that such a strange combination could possibly taste good. But once that enormous tray went into the oven, the incredible aroma quickly changed my mind. When the pizza finally came out, the whole family gathered around the table to try it. The kids weren't impressed, but I absolutely loved it. This is the story of how an ordinary Soviet family discovered pizza — and turned an Italian dish into something completely their own. #USSR #sovietunion #History #story
