@glennmcgoldrick: Ok hot take, if your under 30 with no kids or commitments, why on earth are you trying to work part time or from your shed ? You need every minute you can get working in a professional environment so when life starts hit you, you have a team you can fall back on. What happens when you need a mortgage ? Car finance ? Etc etc or when you decide to have a family or take a career break. You can’t do that unless you have built the skillsets, the brand and the team. I guarantee you never get there working 3 days a week. #hair #salon #barber #barbershop #hairdressers
Barbers who don't know how to do anything but a fade is also a joke

Same with beauticians. Too many inexperienced girls opening up salons straight away with very little experience.

ive had a few people come to me lately saying their child has been refused in barbers because they have autism, thats just lazy barbering in my eyes they just cant be bothered. ive also worked with barbers that refuse long mullets and scissor cuts because they cant do scissor cuts but are going out on their own? dont get me started on giveing square necks on anything above a 1 out of pure laziness

But it’s not a real apprenticeship that’s the problem. It’s not regulated.

47 year old hairdresser here. It absolutely boggles my mind how the young ones carry on these days. I started my apprenticeship at 16, Monday/saturday 9-6pm & two late nights 9-9pm with no set lunch break just grab a bite of a sandwich if you were lucky, doing all the crap jobs whilst attending college 1 week of every 4 and all that for a pittance. Then when qualified I did the same hours & had to do as many clients as possible, bare minimum of 8 a day, mainly wash & blows for at least the first 6 month for not much more money. We wouldn’t have dreamed of calling ourselves “stylists” until we had at least 4 years salon experience & even then you’d have to have up skilled along the way & have some sort of team leader experience & a portfolio full of cuts, colour, perms, men’s, up styles etc. A full head colour was about £30 and it didn’t take 6 hours! Now they are barely qualified and are calling themselves stylists or cutting/color specialists & charge £200 plus for a colour or highlights & behave like nobody before them ever did hair. It’s madness🤯

The standard of barbering has gone terrible as well. I didn’t mind paying premium prices for a haircut before covid, but now bang average barbers who are still highly liable to give you a shit haircut charging 30-40 euro? Madness

Wonder is it all linked to the fact so many of these businesses are being used to launder money? Lack of skill and motivation to create a genuinely successful long standing business.

I worked full time and built clients around my job, eventually went self employed, then i worked 6 days a week for 11 years, and then after covid, i took weekends off. All this while raising a child. 22 years hairdressing now. I think i deserve weekends off now 😅

Remember the days of walk ins and a haircut be 8-12 euro and that haircut would take a barber 30/40 mins of precision 😂 now it’s 30 euro and some barbers take 15/20 mins and rush it

I fully agree with what you saying about training, needs to be more regulated, I’ve seen people do a course one week opening a academy the next week 🙃 but if I stylist wants to work 3 days and earns
