Is OCD an umbrella term where the different types are their own thing but they all still share a few traits? Say, if I had optimization OCD, would none of this apply to me?

Yes all of this! I was terrified that my mom was an alcoholic and that the world was going to crumble when my mom had her friends over once a week to have a glass of wine and watch their show together. It was terrifying and truly broke my heart for years as a child and I still get comments about it now as an adult 😅 Did not realize this was part of my OCD.

That’s so interesting. I haven’t consumed alcohol because of fear of becoming addicted. I often tell people that I’m “pre-alcoholic”.

This was really eye-opening! I had a lot of anxiety around my parents drinking alcohol as a kid (neither of them have problems with alcohol) and now at 30, I made the choice to not drink alcohol a couple years ago but now have extreme anxiety around drinking it, accidentally drinking it and even dreaming about drinking. I’ve never struggled with alcohol or addiction, so it feels very strange how black/white my feelings around it are but this made a lot of sense! I don’t fear for addiction, but for being seen as “bad”
