For the first one, before satnav people used road signs. So you would use the map to know that you needed to go through xyz city and you needed to use this motorway for it because on the key of a map it will show you which ones a motorway and which ones not. Ig for the second one, a solution would just be to meet the person at their house. You've also got to think that people didnt go as far as they used to. Many of the things were local so you could just go from house to house if you really wanted to.

it’s because today even if we literally force ourselves to try read a map and memorise it we know we always have that other option but back then no matter if they didn’t wanna do it or not there was no other option so they were capable of reading/memorising maps and roads. This is a bit of a stretch but possibly in hundreds of years to come if there’s a new type of vehicle that generation will be baffled at the fact that we drove manual cars and they won’t even be able to comprehend how we did it even tho it’s something so simple to us.

People used to use atlases, stars and the sun for navigation alongside a map but they’d also ask for help from locals lol they used to like write down street names and sequences down aswell. And they’d follow landmarks and look for like mountains etc…

As a 90s kid I remember my dad having a big aa road map and my mum trying to give him directions. Trips seemed to take way longer then 😂 thank goodness for satnav

I'm not that old, but when I was younger people generally did not cancel on you at the last minute. It would have to be really bad like a car crash in which case you would just find out the next day or as soon as someone could call your landline. We also had less anxiety around these things because people weren't contactable 24/7, that had just always been the norm

My dad used to drive from London to Scotland, Ireland and Wales using an A to Z. He would have to write it all down and hope for the best haha.

My grandad never uses a sat nav, he looks at a map and memorises where he needs to go, even a 6 hour journey, I have no idea how!!!

I mean if you're going down motorways it would be easy - just remember the junction number. and you'd probably use landmarks (turn left at Tesco, then right at the florists), not just '1st left, 2nd right'
