I really hope Lindsay Clancy’s case leads to a bigger conversation about maternity leave and postpartum support in the United States. Mothers simply do not get enough time, financial support, physical help, or mental-health support after having a baby. We expect women to recover from childbirth, care for a newborn, deal with sleepless nights, hormones, breastfeeding, and everything else that comes with motherhood, and then return to normal life way too quickly. This case is heartbreaking, and nothing can excuse the loss of those children. But I hope we can also look at the bigger picture and ask whether we are doing enough to support mothers before they reach a crisis point. I truly hope something positive can come from this tragedy and that it can lead to real changes in maternity leave and postpartum mental health care in this country 😞
