@holvek: On June 30, 1973, during a total solar eclipse, an unusual scientific experiment was conducted using the Concorde 001 supersonic aircraft prototype. Scientists decided to use the aircraft's high speed to remain in the Moon's shadow for as long as possible. Flying at approximately 2,170 km/h at an altitude of approximately 17 km, the Concorde followed the lunar shadow. This allowed the researchers to observe the total phase of the eclipse for approximately 74 minutes, whereas from a single point on Earth, it lasted only a few minutes. The aircraft carried scientific instruments to study the solar corona, its spectrum and radiation, as well as the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere. The aircraft's high altitude reduced the influence of the Earth's atmosphere on the observations. Thus, Concorde became a kind of flying observatory, and the 1973 experiment became one of the most famous examples of using a supersonic aircraft for astronomical research. #concorde #solareclipse #physics #sciencefacts
