The Danes were tipped off about the operation by Georg Ferdinand Duckwitz, a German attaché to Denmark. He’d become disillusioned with the Nazis, and he first traveled to Sweden to help arrange the escape, then told the Danes about the German plan.

It was the Danish Communists who rescued the Jews. This is what I learned in the school I attended in Denmark.

In 1977 I met a Danish man on the plane from London to Copenhagen. I found out his father was involved in this action to protect the Jews. As an American Jew I'd never heard of this but was/am extremely appreciative and amazed by the Danish King and the population.
