Thomas Sankara. Five leaders who all pushed for African economic sovereignty, all removed by France, the UK, or the US within a generation of independence. Then look at Niger. France mined its uranium since 1965, powering French homes for decades while Niger stayed one of the least electrified countries on earth, paid below-market royalties on its own resource the whole time. In 2023 Niger revoked the license, expelled French troops, and walked out of the French-aligned regional bloc. The response? Sanctions, a no-fly zone, frozen central bank assets, and threats of military intervention. Same playbook as 1961, just without the bullet. Now Burkina Faso’s president Ibrahim Traoré, whose own prime minister served under Sankara, is being branded a dangerous strongman in Western media for doing exactly what Sankara died trying to do: keep his country’s wealth from leaving on someone else’s terms.
