Omg you’ve made me realise that this happened to me. At my last job, I had a good close relationship with my supervisor, but he had to have everything his way. Even if you opened a box differently to him he’d question it lol. If I was out doing deliveries, he’d ask how I was getting on a lot. So I naturally just did what you recommend and told him before he asked. One day he text back, you don’t need to let me know the details, just do what needs to be done. He’d obviously got fed up lol. I think he found it very hard to be nice. He never talked about life outside work even if I tried to. Didn’t ever really feel good enough. However, it had an upside. Other staff made the odd comment about my work that only he would know. I’d done something for a customer once and the main manager came and said well done to me and that I was doing well. This must have come from my supervisor. Then after 5 years, redundancies were announced. Every warehouse member went through it. The manager told me I had the most”points” and was safe straight away. My supervisor had my back. When he left and moved away, I asked him why he was like that. He said, never burn your own bridges, never bring personal life to work, and never bring work to personal life. I left within a month of him leaving.
