Antifascists Then vs. Antifascists Now The Italian Resistance of 1943–1945 was not a single ideologically homogeneous movement. It brought together political forces with fundamentally different ideas about Italy’s future. Communist-oriented Garibaldi Brigades fought alongside formations connected to the Action Party and Giustizia e Libertà, while Christian Democrats, liberals, socialists, monarchists and politically independent groups also participated in the wider Resistance. The National Liberation Committee itself brought several antifascist parties together, while monarchist currents were also present in the broader resistance coalition. This cooperation did not mean that these groups agreed politically. Giustizia e Libertà, for example, developed around liberal-socialist ideas, while communist, Catholic, liberal and monarchist participants could have radically different views on the monarchy, economic organization and the political system that should follow the war. Significant disputes existed inside the Resistance, particularly concerning the future of the monarchy and the social and political order of postwar Italy. What temporarily connected these different currents was opposition to Nazi occupation and Mussolini’s Italian Social Republic. The meme contrasts this historically broad coalition with a satirical representation of ideological disputes within parts of the contemporary left. The second panel should therefore be understood as political satire rather than as a literal description of every modern antifascist activist or organization. Internal disagreements over reformism, revolutionary politics, liberalism and different interpretations of socialism continue to distinguish political tendencies that may nevertheless all describe themselves as antifascist. #Antifascism #ItalianResistance #PoliticalHistory #WWIIHistory #PoliticalSatire
