I think John will be, but it’s obvious he’s still not understanding what he’s training for. I think he spent so long being told to be the perfect marine that he thinks this is more of the same. Do the training and follow the rules and you will succeed. I think there’s a bit of entitlement and “of course I was picked as his replacement.” And he’s struggling to understand why Hal is not trusting him yet. On paper John is doing everything right but he doesn’t understand there are intangibles that Hal has spent years learning

Here’s the thing… Hal absolute knows what John’s dad did to him. John’s dad should be in fucking prison for endangering the life of a child a literally felony. Also Hal knows the “fearlessness” of John isn’t actual true it’s conditioning. He wants to break that out of John so John can learn to be truly fearless

Hal is definitely trying to break John's stoic nature. The ring is powered by emotion so it only makes sense that holding back your emotions would make you weaker. I also think John is misunderstanding a very big trait of a lantern. He is trying to be fearless which isn't the same as being able to overcome fear. I'm willing to bet that's gonna be a plot point later.

Well said I think the guardians are manipulating John which is on brand for them. I think they are trying to make him the perfect soldier for them just like the manhunters and I think John will realize that and turn the ring down in 2016 and become architect and move on which is why he doesn't have it in the current timeline.

I read those situations completely different. I think he respects hal but kinda like a washed Superbowl winning QB. Clearly, he looked up to him. I think he actually appreciated the lesson at the football field, and that's why it's mirrored at the end. I think he has grace for Hal faults but he just doesn't like his personality. He knows he's meant to learn from Hal, but Hal is resisting passing the torch. I think the bar scene is John pressing for answers by hurting his ego, because Hal wouldn't willingly tell him. it's the first time he's actually shared an experience. I still think his arc will be about flexible thinking tho. as far as him just rolling with things, I think that's just a black dude trying to save his energy.

I don’t think Jon is lying when he says that he respects Hal. He’s frustrated, angry, and annoyed by him but at the end of the day Hal is his hero. He for the most part doesn’t shy away from vocalizing how he’s feeling and talking trash about Hal and even still with no hesitation he was able to say he respects him

it’s absurd how good this pilot was (pun intended) may be one of the better pilot episodes for a superhero series we’ve gotten in the modern era. the castings were perfect imo. the buddy cop vibes was so well done. the mystery elements and then the big reveal at the end = chefs kiss

I feel like that’s why he’s pissed at Hal because he’s not training him well enough to have said experience. And being trained from young to have the ring doesn’t mean he’s bigger than the program IMO

John does respect Hal. Maybe not who Hal is now but he definitely does respect the hero he used to be. Hal was John's hero and now that he's meeting and learning from him he's realizing his hero isn't like the idea he had his whole life
