There's an argument going around online right now. That carbs and sugar don't cause insulin resistance, that obesity and inactivity do, and that eating more carbs can actually improve your insulin sensitivity. And here's the thing. It's half right. Which is exactly what makes it dangerous. Let me give it credit first. Here's what it gets right: Carbohydrates by themselves aren't the villain that social media makes them out to be. And 2 of the biggest drivers of insulin resistance are excess body fat and sedentary behavior. A lean, active person handles carbs completely differently than someone who isn't. And in an active person, eating enough carbs can support insulin sensitivity, because their muscles are actually using that fuel. So when we say that
There's an argument going around online right now. So when we say that "carbs aren't automatically bad for you," that’s true. But here's where it goes off the rails: Excess added sugar, especially fructose, creates a roller coaster of insulin spikes and glucose crashes and ultimately drives fat production — from glucose — that accumulates in the liver and is a direct cause of insulin resistance. Also, it's dose-dependent. A little sugar in a lean, active person is fine. A lot of it, on top of too many calories, is the actual problem. So telling people sugar is totally innocent gives them permission to overdo the exact thing that is filling their liver with fat. The truth is in the middle. Added sugar is never beneficial. It does nothing good for your body. If you're lean and active, your body can handle a small amount without much harm. But loading up on it while carrying extra weight is one of the most direct paths to insulin resistance The internet loves an extreme. Carbs are evil, or carbs are totally fine. Reality doesn't work that way. There are many nuances to health and wellness because everyone’s body is different. Your dose, your body composition, and your activity level are the moving parts that determine the whole story. #insulin #metabolichealth #metabolism #longevity
