@drb_unfiltered: One of the biggest mistakes I see couples make is assuming that communication ability is stable across emotional states. It’s not and when ADHD is part of the relationship, that becomes important to this because ADHD is associated with differences in executive functioning AND emotion regulation and those tw4t muffins don’t operate independently of each other. So sometimes what looks like your partner avoiding a convo, suddenly not having anything to say, changing their story, always brining things up later or what’s easy to assume something they should have just brought while you were talking about it may be a difference in what someone could access, organize and communicate in that moment. This doesn’t mean every argument should end the second someone gets uncomfortable and it definitely doesn’t mean ADHD gets to become an excuse for sh*tty communication. It means couples may need a better system than WE MUST SOLVE THIS RIGHT F*CKING NOW. Try creating an agreed upon pause and return system before you’re fighting. The important part is the return because telling your partner that you need time to get your brain back online can be an accommodation. Disappearing from the conversation indefinitely is not 🤪 Disclaimer: This content is educational and intended to add an ADHD informed lens to common relationship & s//ggsual dynamics. It is not meant to be generalized to all relationships or all ADHD experiences, which exist on a spectrum. Every relational dynamic is different and context matters. If you and your partner(s) are experiencing distress or ongoing conflict, consult a qualified professional rather than relying on social media for guidance. This information and page does not replace therapy. #adhd #relationships #fighting

Mr. Edward Nigma :
oh, you mean that brain lock I get when I'm trying to explain myself and then the entire argument just goes away? and then I have to make a decision 15 minutes later whether to pick this back up or let it go? and after making that decision, one way or the other, I'm screwed either way because my wife is now very angry at me? no, never heard of it

The text thing seems like a good idea. But does it work for neurotypicals?

My husband and I take time outs when we are emotionally unregulated during an argument. It has defined rules. We set a timer and then walk away. It has helped me organize my thoughts when its a cluster F- inside my brain.

What’s even worse is I will have this enormous soul shattering happiness from the way I think I’m being heard or spoken to. And the next day I forget why I’m supposed to still be angry.

What about when you do this in a professional setting? You're strongly worded, well thought out email makes you look like a jerk.
