My guy... It's not about the monetary worth of the coin, it's about the fact that we care and use them so little in our daily lives (especially now with NFC tap-to-pay on our phones and watches) that we just don't carry them around anymore. The issue here is importance of convenience, not the value.

Fun fact paying the quarter was not to prevent them from being stolen it was teach people to use it and putting it back were it belongs after shopping.

You want the real explanation? I haven’t carried cash in 20 years. I have a specific Aldi quarter. Hell, I don’t even like handing off my cart for someone else’s quarter bc I like MY Aldi quarter. I’m not even an Aldi person either. I go maybe 3x/year.

Literally the other week, i offered my cart at aldi to a couple. They begin going to their picket to give me a quarter and i go “don’t worry about it you can just have the cart.” They asked me if i was sure and i literally said “it’s just a quarter, it’s not going to break me” 😂

They really need to update the locks so they can take a credit card. The only reason I don’t go to go Aldi is because I don’t carry or use cash ever.

The quarter is not used to prevent someone from stealing the cart. It’s simply so people bring their carts back and not leave it all over the parking lot. European stores have been doing this for years and their parking lots are clean and no need for someone to run around and collect the carts

It's not the amount of money. It's that nobody carries cash (especially change). I keep a few quarters and dollar coins in the car but I would soon find myself needing and being without if I just left the coins in the carts and walked away. And the stores are no help at all. They won't even front their regular customers 25c as a matter of policy.

I leave the quarter in my cart everytime for the next person and I always look around to make sure no one is watching bc I don’t want someone to just come take the quarter without needing the cart lmao

I usually leave my cart with the rest of them with the quarter still in it. Or I offer to take someone's cart with the quarter in hand offered to them at the same time.
