@mertdelikisii: Released on August 12, 1991, Metallica’s self-titled album, better known as The Black Album, marked a major turning point for bassist Jason Newsted. Unlike the band’s previous album, Newsted became more involved in the creative process and was given greater freedom to contribute musically, even while wrestling with personal doubts about Metallica’s changing sound and direction. His most significant contribution came with “My Friend of Misery.” Newsted originated the central bass-driven idea and was given the opportunity to develop the musical foundation, making it one of the defining creative moments of his time with Metallica. It allowed him to demonstrate a more creative side of his musicianship within a band that was beginning to move far beyond the relentlessly aggressive sound of its earlier records. Newsted later admitted that he initially thought “Enter Sandman” was somewhat cheesy, while he was also uneasy about “Nothing Else Matters” because of its softer and more vulnerable character. Coming from a preference for Metallica’s heavier earlier material, the band’s new direction represented a significant adjustment.
