i like to think that sweetener is a literal, liminal place in ariana's mind. that album is ariana's most artistic and conceptually detailed piece of work yet, especially when it came to the visuals. even ari said herself that artistic choices, like to incorporate rotated imagery for example, was to reflect how she felt "upside down" in that period of time. its really cool how she showed us that a pop album doesn't need to be flashy and colourful to be inciting. its the liminality of sweetener, how some of the artwork even appears eerie/ lonely, that really helps to convey the message of the album to the audience. and at the same time, it all aligns with ariana's soft, feminine aesthetic. sometimes a pop album about struggle doesn't need to be visually or lyrically dark, on sweetener ariana contrasts easy to learn lyrics about healing and love with deeper visuals that seem like shes mentally working her way back to how she was before the attack
