For viewers not employed in tech, this is unreasonably realistic. This conversation is far more plausible than it has any business being, lol.

If I had a nickel for every time someone proposed a solution that would end up like Gary, I’d have $1.37. And no, I don’t know where those pennies came from.

A key part of the emergency restoration plan for my company is a license dongle that lives in my backpack. It has a limited number of uses but the only way to check how many uses it has left is to use one. It’s okay though, my coworker also has a similar license dongle but his has more uses left. No one thinks there is anything wrong with both of us taking PTO and leaving the country/state at the same time.

You can't add it to the runbook because the auditors will then learn that Gary exists. That would be a disaster

Gary gets paid $300,000 a year and comes into the office once every six months. Gary does whatever he wants.

Every company great or small is running off an excel spreadsheet created by a guy who retired 30 years ago. Some are lucky enough to have a pivot table.

yep, tech and apps are not replaced until they completely fail and they will patch it for years before actually upgrading, because it's hard.

To be fair! we managed to get ransomware on our infrastructure a few years back. The server that saved us was a Windows Server 2003 machine we ran backups on. The reason it saved us was because it ran a 32-bit OS and the malware was for 64-bit 😂 I was not the one that set that up. I have since upgraded EVERYTHING

Over a decade ago, I worked in a helpdesk and one of our customers was a lady who maintained an AS400 server which supported the entire business. She was not trained in IT, but had learned enough 5250 to keep the system moving. I suspect she is still working today and has job security for life.

When I used to be a sysop, took over an office building and could not for the life of me find their on perm…. They had remodeled and closed the room off with the equipment…. Asking why “nobody went in there anyways and it’s always been up and running”…. Had to demo the hidden door out
