Of course, like so many people, I’ve been tuning into the Lindsay Clancy trial. I want to understand. I want to learn. Postpartum is my field…I see it unfold every day. I’ve seen postpartum depression and anxiety, and I’ve experienced depression and anxiety myself. So watching this case has been heartbreaking in a very personal way. This is an extreme case. An unimaginable case. But I keep asking myself: is the unraveling really as rare as we think it is? Or is the severity simply what’s extreme? How many women are quietly unraveling right now? How many mothers tell a practitioner, “Something isn’t right,” only to be told it’s normal? How many have their symptoms minimized, their intuition dismissed, their exhaustion normalized? How sick does a woman have to become before someone finally says, “I believe you. Let’s get you help”? And then I think about the people closest to her. The people seeing her every day. The people who had opportunities to notice that something was changing. I don’t think we know everything yet, and I don’t think we should pretend we do. But I do think this case forces us to ask uncomfortable questions about how we care for women postpartum. Women deserve to be heard. They deserve to be believed. Their symptoms matter. Their mental health matters. Their intuition matters. Postpartum matters. I hope this case reminds us that we cannot wait until a mother is in crisis before we decide she deserves care. #postpartumdepresssion #postpartumpsychosis #lindsayclancy
