She called it ma maison. My home. Then in the summer of 1940 the Luftwaffe made the hotel its Paris headquarters. Hermann Göring took the Imperial Suite on Place Vendôme. Chanel was moved to two small rooms on the rue Cambon side. She stayed. Her lover was Baron Hans Günther von Dincklage, thirteen years younger, and an Abwehr intelligence officer. She called him Spatz. Sparrow. When Paris was liberated in August 1944, Hemingway was downstairs taking the bar and the French resistance came for her upstairs. They released her within hours. No charges. Chanel always said Winston Churchill got her out, and nobody has ever proved it. Across France that summer roughly 20,000 women who had slept with Germans were dragged into town squares and shaved bald in front of a crowd. Coco walked. She died at that same hotel on a Sunday night in January 1971, 87 years old. Her last words to her maid: you see, this is how one dies. The room she lived in is now called the Coco Chanel Suite.
