At many U.S. airports, people who weren't flying could still pass through security checkpoints and enter the gate areas. Families could walk loved ones to their flights, couples could say goodbye at the gate, and friends could be waiting just beyond the jet bridge when someone arrived. Security screening still existed. Passengers and visitors passed through metal detectors and had their belongings screened, but access to the concourse generally wasn't restricted to ticketed travelers the way it is today. After the September 11 attacks, airport security underwent sweeping changes. The Transportation Security Administration was created in November 2001, and access beyond security checkpoints became largely restricted to ticketed passengers. For millions of Americans, the familiar scene of waiting at the gate to welcome someone home became a piece of everyday history. #TSA #Nostalgia
