The Department of Tourism, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment, Bhutan, in collaboration with the Zhemgang Dzongkhag Administration, is delighted to announce that the 6th edition of the Bhutan Bird Festival will be held from 13-14 November 2026 in Zhemgang, widely recognized as the ecotourism capital of Bhutan, drawing birders, nature lovers, and adventure seekers from around the world. Located in the heart of Bhutan, an eight-hour drive from the capital, Thimphu, Zhemgang borders three protected areas Royal Manas National Park, Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park, and Phrumsengla National Park making it a paradise for birdwatchers. The region is home to 357 species of birds, including the Pallasโ€™s Fish Eagle, Satyr Tragopan, Rufous-throated Hornbill, Spotted Elachura, Blue-capped Rock Thrush, Emerald Cuckoo, Nuthatch, and the White-bellied Heron. Beyond its birdlife, Zhemgang's subtropical ecosystem holds the highest concentration of Bengal Tigers and the endangered Golden Langur, while the Mangde Chu and Drangme Chu river basins make it one of Bhutan's premier destinations for water-based adventure. The two-day festival is designed to promote birding, strengthen ecotourism, and support the local economy through a wide range of activities. Visitors can attend a bird conservation awareness program featuring talks and documentaries by national and local bird experts, and join the Birdathon, and other related activities. For fitness enthusiasts, the festival will host a 21km half-marathon from Tingtibi to Yebelaptsa, showcasing Zhemgang's scenic landscapes. The adventure seekers can go recreational boating at Berti or try fly-fishing. Bird and wildlife-themed face painting will add to the family-friendly atmosphere. Cultural performances will be a festival highlight, with local bands, dancers, and musicians presenting mask dances and traditional Bhutanese music, alongside bird-themed dances featuring performers dressed as birds symbolizing the harmony between Bhutanese culture and nature. Food stalls will showcase Zhemgang's signature dishes, including kharang (grained maize), smoked fish, bamboo shoots, pickles, and Tongpa (a traditional wheat-based wine served in bamboo containers). Visitors will also have the opportunity to view and purchase bamboo-woven household items, baskets, and ornaments, crafted using techniques recognized as one of Bhutan's thirteen traditional arts and crafts. Bhutan is home to more than 770 bird species, including four critically endangered species the White-bellied Heron, Baer's Pochard, White-rumped Vulture, and Red-headed Vulture. The country's approach to conservation is distinctive: rather than hunting or disturbing birds, Bhutanese communities coexist with them, sharing their natural habitat in a model of sustainable living.
