@allthefeelstherapy: Replying to @thesciencesmith You’ll hear the term “hysterical bonding” used to describe increased sexual intimacy after betrayal, but it actually isn’t a well-established clinical or research term. What research does show is much more nuanced: sexual desire after infidelity can increase, decrease, disappear, become more complicated, or sometimes feel more connecting. And newer research highlights something I think is far more useful than giving that response a label: talking about sexual intimacy expectations after betrayal. What do you want right now? What does your partner want? What expectations are you placing on sex? And are you allowed to change your mind as recovery unfolds? My thoughts? Sex after betrayal doesn’t need a label. It needs room for honesty, consent, and changing your mind. Educational content only. Not therapy or individualized advice. This content discusses general relationship research and may not apply to every relationship or situation. Not applicable in cases of abuse or coercion. #couplestherapy #affairrecovery #betrayaltrauma #infidelityrecovery #healingafterbetrayal

After I found out. I decided to forgive him and for some reason have been wanting to sleep with him more after finding out. Idk why truthfully. And for some reason it’s been better?! I’m genuinely confused. I’m still so angry with him and hurt, but at the same time I want to still feel close to him intimately.

my first relationship with my children after finding out about the cheating I was extremely focused on sex but would ball my eyes out right after and during... that was hysterical bonding for sure💔 this time I just found out with my new boyfriend after almost 2yrs and I dont even want to see touch or be around him at all. I don't want sex at all I feel completely numb and shocked... 💔

See I felt that the term hysterical bonding was very fitting for what I personally experienced in the first couple weeks or months after discovery. To this day I have a hard time describing it, beyond like a primal need to "claim" but then immediately after feeling utterly devastated and heart broken- hysterically crying. Now I could honestly care less whether we ever do again, and its been over 5 yrs since discovery.

Me asf rn😫 He even brought it up asking if I was only doing it because of what had happened. I tbh I really have no clue. Like my immediate thought is no bc I know that that’s bad, but then why am I craving it more now?? Because I never did before. A part of me wants to subconsciously think, okay well maybe my body and spirit knew what was happening so that’s why I didn’t wanted to be intimate with him and know that I know and he has come clear maybe like my body has opened up again?? Ugh I’m too young to be stressing about this fr 😫

overcompensation of the cheater, or the betrayed partner grabbing at straws trying to fill the void the cheater felt they needed to find outside of the relationship.

I've been married for 30 years, and when I found out that my husband had a porn addiction, it completely changed the way I viewed our marriage. In his defense, he was in the Army for 30 years. Because of deployments, schools, field time, and everything else that came with his career, he was gone quite a lot. Looking back, I realize that the amount of time he was away gave him the opportunity to live a double life without me knowing. Long story short, during our marriage, I can honestly say that it was a very sexless marriage because he was gone so much. Then, for a few years after he retired, we almost completely stopped having sex—maybe once every couple of months, if that. Then the betrayal came out, and everything changed. We suddenly started having a lot of sex. But despite the increase in physical intimacy, I don't feel emotionally connected to him. I don't really know how to explain it. My body can be intimate with him, but emotionally, I still feel completely disconnected. I've told him, "I can share my body with you, but you will never have my mind again." I think that's the best way I can explain how I feel. He may have access to my body, but the deepest parts of me—the way I think, the way I feel, and the emotional connection I once gave him—are no longer his to have.

Appreciate the response. But I probably should have mentioned that while the increased sex was great, it didn't help with healing at all. I think I was just searching for a connection after years of little physical intimacy and then finding out and feeling like she chose others over me. The marriage is over now, because of the trickle truths and the fact that I discovered four additional affair partners.

I think it would be important to split the data by gender. “Make up sex” is something frequently initiated by women who fear losing their partners after an argument. Obviously, infidelity is an order of magnitude greater. But, my point is: initiating sex is not typically part of an apology strategy for the average man. It may be part of a distraction tactic, but not an apology.

id wonder if sex, with boundaries, could be helpful. intentional, and with emotional care. in my process, no-sex leads to feelings of disconnect and not feeling desired, plus the unhealthy insecurity “if they’re not getting it here-where are they getting it from?”. too much sex feels like escapism. but who knows. even with books and research, every case feels so different.

What if you were denied sex but she went and had sex with someone else but realized she made a mistake so now sex is a stipulation if she wants to stay in the relationship

A person cheated on me physically emotionally mentally verbally you will never touch me again and I will never have sex with you to prove that I am a better choice or to do it better than they are. I’m not insecure like that and I think a lot of women should help themselves from doing that stupid stuff.
