Rumi was diagnosed around 20 weeks with HLHS, a life-threatening defect where the left side of the heart cannot properly support circulation. Treatment is 3-stage palliative heart surgery, beginning days after birth; it is NOT a cure, requires lifelong congenital-cardiac care, and some patients eventually need transplant. After consulting doctors, his parents chose termination. West initially agreed and scheduled the appointment herself, then changed her mind. And here’s the part the “they wanted him dead” crowd keeps skipping: once termination was off the table, his parents planned for him to live. They arranged for delivery in California so their critically ill newborn could immediately enter care with the specialized LA cardiac team intended to manage his lifelong treatment. They also sought further prenatal testing to determine his condition and surgical options; according to their court filing, West refused the amniocentesis. Then West cut off contact, withdrew the medical releases that let his parents speak with his doctors, and moved to Texas, forcing Rumi to begin complex cardiac treatment away from the team his parents had already arranged. So no: choosing termination after a devastating diagnosis does not mean they planned to neglect a living newborn. When West took termination away as an option, they made a medical plan for their son. She interfered with it. Facts are considerably less cute than the pro-birth fairy tale.

Here's the weirdest part she could have denied a termination because they couldn't physically force one on her and paid back part of the parents money (as stated in contract) and moved on with her life. Instead she contacted pro life groups who moved her to tx, paid for her lawyer and made this baby a political pawn.

People need to understand this is not a curable illness/condition, just a treatable one with varying success. We have no idea what kind of quality of life this child will have and for how long. Rumi was not an “accidental” pregnancy, he is very much loved and wanted but quality of life was also something his parents considered. Now he will struggle and be at risk for the remainder of his life
