@glitchgestaltgirl: Which Dune adaptation you watch completely changes how you understand the story and Paul Atreides’ character arc. David Lynch and Denis Villeneuve have very different takes on the same source material that completely change the message. #dune #heroesjourney #screenwriting #storytelling #TikTokAdaptationContest

In the books Paul is neither. He’s a coward. He fears the suffering in the golden path and so avoids it. Leto is the true hero - and villain - of the story. To be the hero he has to be the worst villain.

I recently finished Dune Messiah and was blown away and surprised it’s not talked about more. A much quieter book than Dune, but for me, a much deeper and more interesting one.

Capturing Cara :
To be fair, Lynch did not have the creative freedom he wanted in the film and became so disillusioned with the project, he wasn't looking for a franchise. Villeneuve had a lot more freedom and was looking to make it the epic drama that the books were.

Started here for the HR breakdowns, now we’re getting Dune philosophy? Your account is terrific (I like the Villeneuve best)

Villanueve is still a bit too coy about Paul villainy in the adaptation. He still plays him as an anti hero and not the actual villan

That’s only because Denis includes elements from more than the first book. Lynch only tells the story written in the first book of Dune.

This is a clear understanding of the book. It's about man being placed into a place that that's been planned out of for, but ignores and fucks up everything

Paul and his descendants are faced with powers and cosmic influences they can only navigate by making many sacrifices. They are suffering from it too, but don't have a say in the matter. The hero quicky becomes overwhelmed and faced with terrible choices

Why does everyone always default to Lynch when the sci-fi miniseries is the superior version??

That was what was so enrapturing about the book to me. Herbert wrote it in a way that made me recognize and instinctively want to follow the “hero’s journey” but also crawled under my skin whispering “but something is wrong here…”

My fave is Sci-fi channel for sure (children of dune made me a McAvoy fan), but there will always be a special place in my heart for the 1984 adaptation and alternately Alan Smithee's Dune. Bookwise it's probably God Emperor of Dune, and maybe Chapterhouse. Paul is merely the beginning of the story.

I've read and now listened to all six (seven is completely optional) so many times over the years and I am still struck by how much they have to offer. To me they seem even more relevant as commentary to the world we find ourselves in.

Denis Villenueve is a typical French anti-Muslim racist who stripped all of the Arab origins of the books. Like the movie but I don't forgive ☹️

i really dislike the stilgar in the new adaptations. in the books he’s a cynical serious religious man. in the movies he’s a comical relief that keeps yelling phrases to make the audience laugh.

Well if you know the full story there is a hero. It's Duncan he outlived Paul's sons nightmare
