Most teachers can’t take an hour off or move lunch an hour to go to an appointment, like many professions can. I think I’ve heard of one board that can. Most sick days go towards appointments with specialists who aren’t available after 3pm, and you need to take either a half day or a full day depending on which time slot you get.

I’ll also remind parents that education unions approached the government back in early March to begin the collective bargaining process. The government so far has not agreed to begin bargaining, and contracts are up Aug. 31, and the school year starts Sept. 1st. It’s likely education workers will begin the school year without contracts in place. Does this sound familiar, folks?

As a kid of a teacher, I struggled to get their attention because all they did was work, because they had to. I don’t resent them for it, it was their job, but half of that was unpaid labour. Half of my family are teachers now, and they’re the most patient, loving individuals that are struggling to keep a roof over their heads. Ford doesn’t give a shit about us, them, or the kids that are suffering from lack of education funding; he just wants us to look the other way while he strokes his besties under the table.

Hi. 👋 teacher here. We WANT to be in our classrooms. It make our jobs harder to take even a half day off. We have to make lesson plans and often have to deal with issues that happened while we were away. We only take sick days when gasp 😮 we are sick or have a specialist appointment. I actually see teachers away from their classes more for sports than anything else. I wish the government would stop vilifying us and work with us. We literally are educating the future.
