This is validating my desire to have timed math facts quizzes. Some facts you just need to know. If you're struggling on the math facts you lose the momentum and stamina to solve complex equations.

We memorized multiplication tables up to 12. And square numbers up to 25. Square roots for 2, 3 and 5 out to 3 digits. Pi to 10 digits. Don't ask me why those were the important sqrts and why pi couldn't stop at 3.14. In college I memorized the powers of 2 up to ^20 because I was earning a degree in engineering. My kids think I am a math genius even though these are just the basics. My children find it annoying I do math through Trig in my head. Even though I do break it down for them to assist. Common Core was actually a challenge for both my kids and myself because I had to assist them with 3 approaches to basic arithmetic. Khan Academy saved me. The old school math was obvious but was taught last in the lessons.. Kids would get marked down if they didn't learn each method. In my opinion, Common Core made it more difficult for most students and parents.

Actually, highly selective colleges are going back to requiring standardized testing because they realized that not requiring standardized testing didn’t work.

It’s interesting that they are removing “sight math” like memorizing multiplication, and they are adding sight words for reading. It’s basically sounding out math and memorizing reading, the opposite of what we need

No this is real bro. I’m in my calc 1 class at a smaller college, and some people don’t know interval notation or how exactly something being squared works or how any general function works

when I was in college in 2014-2017 the student athletes could not do math either. I went to a big ten college and tutored athletes. they could not do the most remedial introductory math. I am seeing that it's now the majority of students versus just the student athlete population.

I think common core is wayyyy too abstract for kids, and I really hope we ditch it soon :/ I cannot help my cousins that are doing their math hw

rote memorization and actual understanding are not mutually exclusive. you should understand the math, but also memorize enough to use it quickly

I was SO mad at my parents for making me memorize times tables and do match during the summers in elementary school, but I got an engineering degree and was able to do really complicated math! Also just life skills wise I can do quick maths in my head where other people struggle. I see the huge disparity in people who graduated 4 years after me (I’m 29)

I went to an NYC public school. We had to memorize 0-12 multiplication. You did 1 set a week and it started in 3rd grade. By 4th grade we had multiplication masters. You would get a test with 50 random problems made up of 0-12 multiplication masters every Friday. Once you got 100 you didn't need to test anymore and got your name on a special board with a sticker and for the period when the class was testing you got "free time"

Ive been teaching highschool math for 26 years, and I couldn't agree more with everything you've said!! I implement russian/procedural math at home with my own kids (7th grade) and im watching in real time as they eclipse the ability of my 11th grade students. its really sad.

Four schools in two states, two kids, and we’ve had two years - two! - where math classwork or homework was marked for accuracy. Not only did they not have to memorize their math facts for school, but they also could just be wrong, all the time, and no one would tell them directly. (We do “5 minute math” after dinner - those 100 facts sheets for each operation. I write down your time and score and tell you how much you’ve improved.)

I did multiplication facts 0x0 to 12x12 with my kids. They are all graduated now and I wish I had thought to do addition and subtraction too. They do fine but knowing multiplication was very beneficial overall to each of them for certain. Will definitely to addition and subtraction facts with the grandbabies.
