Companies need to quit being so picky! They come up with a laundry list of skills and hiring managers wand you to have done things a specific way. The exact feedback I got today was that hiring manager said I didn’t have prior experience doing certain things THEIR way! In the interview, I was clear that I understood there were different ways of doing the things, and that I could adapt due to having vast knowledge of the platform and the different ways of doing things. Even the recruiter said he is getting tired of this particular client turning away great candidates he presents because they not-pick everything and are looking for a unicorn! This is happening more often than not.

I have changed my résumé too many times to count to fit the job description to fit who I am as a person or just to be bullet points. My résumé is not the problem. Another thing that has been very difficult during this time is that a follow up after an application is not normal anymore it actually makes the employer not want to hire you and I know this because the jobs that I did reach out to asking about the status of my application, either rejected me or ghosted me. It’s the employer that is the problem.

I applied to a job that was 10 minutes away good pay good everything but it was in a different town. I go there for the interview it was amazing they wanted to hire me but then they hit me with this job requires you to relocate and have to live in the town within one year of employment i told them that was NOT a requirement on the job description and it was not disclosed anywhere and he goes well it was something that just passed recently within the last month and I go well if that was the case then it should’ve been posted on the job description then I asked what the pay was and it was no where enough for me to buy a house in that town within a year. I’m like can’t you make an exception I live only 10 minutes away if it was a commuting issue or something and they said no. So I walked out like wtaf are these job requirements now

I'm going on 3 years of underemployment. I have a part time job which I'm very grateful for, but that's the only place that's even called me back. I've revised my resume about 6 times now and been using this time to gain new technical skills. I've tried all the "tips and tricks" and still nothing. My degree is in data science. Unfortunately, the longer people are unemployed, the more of a red flag that is to employers so I feel like I'm cooked

While I agree job seekers need to make sure they change things up, it hard when you get zero feedback. But also it assumes that if the job seeker did something different they would have been successful, when the jobs data shows thats not the reality of today's market. There are more job seekers than available posted jobs and thats before considering ghost jobs. Job posting receive hundreds to thousands of applications a week, and companies spend weeks to a few months interviewing candidates before deciding that priorities have changed and the job is no longer available. Changes in individual behaviors can not fix systematic failures, at best it will only shift the problem onto someone else.
