how long do you leave the leftover strands? do you weave them in once you finish the work or cut them shorter?

If I'm just adding a new skein/ball of the same yarn, I do a little extra by starting like you did but then also knitting a few stitches while alternating the yarns. I'm just paranoid about it coming apart lol
