As a mech eng I can say it's not meant for that. You side load the strut rod that way and put it in bending. The lip is meant so it catches on the rod. Just like a caulking gun.

Nope you’re not…. Now you are putting the load on the centre of the shaft instead of the supported base of the shaft in turn, bending your shaft and prematurely, wearing out the seals

a lot of doors dont open fat enough because of walls or walls with meter boxes, quite a stupid frustrating design really (houses not the latch)
