@evonab99: Wait… WHO decided we needed 1A–4C to describe our hair?! 👀 & why did two hairstylists tell me they weren’t taught this in school? I have QUESTIONS. 😩 #fyp #haireducation #naturalhair #hairtype #hairtok

It’s the model only getting darker as the curl gets tighter…🤨

Oprah's former hair stylist, Andre Walker did this in the 90s. That's why it wasn't taught in cosmetology school. It has gotten out of control and now is a marketing ploy to sell products. lol 😅🤣

This chart should only be used to identify similarities in wave pattern. You and I could have 4c and because of the different amount of cuticle layers, thickness of cortex, porosity, density, and elasticity products are going to respond differently. I genuinely hate how people are obsessed with this chart.

Andre Walker, Oprah's hair stylist from the 90s made this typing system up to sell his hair products. aka Gimmick... This has been widely criticized off and on for YEARS. I have no idea why it keeps coming up. No matter how you switch it up, add letters or numbers its only a physical description of your curl pattern. You are correct we are too focused on it and knowing a curl type doesn't tell you how to care for your hair. moisture level, density, porosity, etc. provide much more information about your hair needs.

around 2010 the black natural hair community started it in order to help people figure out hair products. it was very useful then

Definitely wasn’t taught when I was in beauty school (1986-1987). It’s a bit much for me to be honest

The chart is true because have 4c kinky curly tight hair that looks just like that 4c pic. Hair is not a loose curl🙂

It’s definitely marketing, my stylists said they wasn’t taught this in school. My current stylist said I’m ‘medium grade’.
