A cheap decanter does the same thing as an expensive one, even use a big mason jar if you want, but decanting is important. Points on wines don’t matter, judge a wine off of what you like not what someone else likes. Michelin starred somms are great at recommending bottles when you tell them what you like and are a wealth of knowledge. Cult wines are often incredible to the right audience (just like cult films). Aerators are stupid, just decant.

Calling 100-point wines, decanters, Michelin stars, and restaurant critics “worthless” while praising mass-produced, over-extracted wines is kind of crazy.
But I guess quality is subjective. If your benchmark for a great wine is something that tastes like it was engineered to make the Cheesecake Factory wine list, then we’re clearly looking for very different things. I’ll stick with balance, complexity, terroir, and craftsmanship. You can keep the cheap, sugary juice.

1 and 5 I disagree with. The others are subjective a good Som in a Michelin or non- Michelin restaurant can steer you in a direction that suits your tastes. Older wines need decanting to open them up and unlike your video where you state that meant spending a lot of money on one I agree but no not any bottle works the more surface area the wine touches the better so shape matters. Young wines are what aerators are good for again doesn’t have to be expensive but adding air into the wine helps it breathe and taste the grapes better rather than the immediate bitterness from the tannins darker fuller reds.

So a decanter isn’t worth $30-$40?

I can’t afford expensive reds, target $7 Bogle and others up to $11. I think aerating or pouring a trickle-from-high to aerate does make a difference. And letting it breathe for a wee bit. Am I wrong?

I have to disagree with decanters. I have decanted many a bottle and it’s definitely worthwhile, especially younger wines. I’ve had several 100 point wines 2002 Insignia , 1998 Angelus, 2005 Grange, 2002 Dominus, 2004 Casanova Di Neri Brunello Di Montalcino Cerretalto, 2009 Smith-Haut Lafitte, and that’s just the beginning. My list has 1145 bottles consumed so I’m not gonna go through all those are just the highlights oh and one more. 1995 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut. I also disagree with aerators aerator are cool. They help for a quick decant. Started in The Wine business in 1993. I retired from The Wine business in 2011, but I’m still actively involved in buying purchasing drinking and reviewing wines and like I said I’ve consumed 1145 bottles since using CellarTracker, however that does not count all the bottles I consumed from 1993 up until 2003, when CellarTracker was started
