You can't hang the towel over the towel bar that way. Fold in thirds lengthwise, then in half, then in half again. Looks exactly the same on the shelf and can be easily and neatly hung on the towel bar.

This is exactly how I have taught my kids to fold towels. My bathroom shelf is narrow so I now take that final hamburger and fold it into thirds versus half.
