These clients or freed slaves would be protected by the tribe, adopt their customs, and eventually be viewed as part of the tribe, despite their foreign roots. With the rapid expansion of the Islamic empire, this practice exploded. As Arabs conquered vast territories across Persia, Byzantium, North Africa, and Central Asia, they brought countless non-Arabs into their orbit. Many of these non-Arabs — Persians, Romans, Turks, and others — settled in the Arabian Peninsula, living among the Arabs and even intermarrying with them. Over generations, non-Arab physical features, like very fair skin, light eyes, and straight hair, became normalized within certain tribes. Eventually, these newcomers — some of whom held onto a racial superiority complex — began to dominate the narrative of who was considered “Arab.” They rewrote the image of the Arab in their own likeness, erasing the memory of the original Black Arabs of the peninsula. By the time the Ottomans arrived, many of these “Arabized” tribes were complicit in the enslavement of the original inhabitants — joining their colonizers in masking as the native people while participating in the oppression of those who looked like the actual founders of Arab civilization.
