Did you know that people in Kansai (Osaka, Kyoto) usually stand on the right side of the escalator, while in Tokyo they traditionally stand on the left? It’s one of those small differences you might notice when traveling between the two regions. The right-side custom is especially associated with Osaka, while other parts of Kansai can be more mixed, so it’s best to follow what people around you are doing. There isn’t one confirmed reason why this started. One common theory is that the habit became popular around the 1970 Osaka Expo, when people were encouraged to stand on the right to match international conventions. Another theory goes further back and says that merchants in Osaka traditionally walked on the right, while people in Edo, today’s Tokyo, tended to keep left. The exact origin is still debated. 📌 Important: Railway companies now increasingly ask passengers to stand still on both sides instead of walking, because walking on escalators can cause accidents and congestion. Have you ever noticed this difference while traveling around Japan? 🇯🇵 #japan #tokyo #japantrip #japantravel #traveljapan
