I raised kids and worked my butt off. I skipped the saving and investing part and spent the money on electric, water, food and rent, if there was anything left it went to the kids. Shoulda, coulda, woulda, but didn’t. 😂

I’m uncomfortable with people saying: We were told / we were not told, etc. Older generations did not save. Younger generations post-college struggling with jobs and student loans. I just don’t get how blaming something outside the self addresses decisions that self made. And respectfully, Index Funds have been on the scene for decades. In the 80s people are buying CDs. By 1993 Gen X is day trading and buying into Mutual funds. Social Security is a net, and it is vital, and every person who works has paid into it. Those in higher brackets will never get the value of what they put into it; and those in lower brackets will receive more than they paid into it: so it goes. The average amount per month is 2k and change. And if one is single, retirement is especially difficult. I don’t know what best helps those struggling. I do know blaming others—they, whoever they is—won’t help. Blaming the self won’t help, either. Life throws curves.
