Darrell “Dusty” Crawford, a member of the Blackfeet Nation, submitted his DNA to an ancestry company expecting a normal family-history report. Instead, researchers told him they had found something extraordinary. His mitochondrial DNA belonged to an ancient Native American lineage known as haplogroup B2. The company said it could trace that maternal line back around 55 generations, farther into the past than it had managed for any previous customer. That would place his ancestral line in the Americas thousands of years before the pyramids were built. The result does not mean Crawford’s DNA itself is 17,000 years old. It means the maternal line passed from mother to child through his family can be connected to an extremely ancient Native American population. Researchers described the discovery as exceptionally rare. For Crawford, the result also carried a deeper meaning. His people had passed down stories for generations saying they had lived on that land since time immemorial. Now, a tiny piece of DNA appeared to connect his family to a history stretching back thousands upon thousands of years. One simple ancestry test ended up revealing a family story older than most civilizations
