I have a neighbor that stops in front of my house to put my trash can away if it's still out when he comes by. I never asked for him to do this. He never took credit for it either. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this small gesture.

For me, it helps to have friends who are really clear about their boundaries. As someone who’s hyper-independent, I know that when they offer to help—or when I have to ask them for something—they genuinely want to do it. And if they don’t, I trust that they’ll just say no. That makes it a lot easier for me to actually accept help without feeling like I’m imposing.

I tell my friends I would rather rip my fingernails off then receive a gift or even a coffee from them. It makes me SO uncomfortable

This is of no help but i just have to say As someone who suffers from this BAD, i dont even know how to go to people who i genuinely love for help. Like i dont even know how to be truly known. Im trying to grow out if this but its so bad. My husband has been one of the few people who has been able to crack this code for me. I hate that im like this but genuinely cant help it.

A few years ago, my bestie bought me a pair of pants from a high end outdoor store( for my bday) They didn't fit, so we went to try to exchange them for a better size. It was a sale item, and a size for me wasn't available. It was $80. I was so upset, and expressed how much I could buy at a local thrift shop for that much $$. She didn't understand why I was so upset. I would never shop in this center. It was all so overly expensive. I get that you can afford to shop there, but it's not my vibe!! I want to contribute to the community, not the corporations. I told her, I need a BP cuff. Cause I'm older and have high blood pressure to keep an eye on. That was the exchange. Got a refund and she bought me a cuff that I still use today. It's one thing to be able to help your friend, it's another to understand what they need. Conversation is key. Ask what they need help with, then do your best to respectfully accommodate. Because, even being a single mom, we still need help in certain situations. Mine is 30 now, but there were so many times I needed help. I refused a lot, but there were times I had no choice. ✌️💗

My heart truly goes out to all of y’all 😭 I just wanna see people succeed and blossom - it truly breaks my heart that “care” has been utilized as a fulcrum for manipulation or has been transactional. I’ll keep showing up for those in my life. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with me❤️

I was just with a hyper independent person and I’m someone who loves doing nice little things for people, unconditionally, just to make them smile. But I feel like I could sense it made her uneasy at times. Wasn’t sure how I could get it across to her that it was honest and non transactional.

I think Meg is right with patience and figuring out what the other person needs. Even when I’m in the worst of my throws, I’d rather not ask for help and just use my cane bust my ass. So I think just leaving like a container of food randomly would help potentially?

tbh if my friend see me as hyper independent I don’t consider them friends and I hope they don’t consider me their friend either … like if I have to be hyper independent I don’t consider you my friend 😅

Me personally, I would much rather return the favour. If someone wants to help me out, they will have to understand that having an "unpaid debt" is just going to make me feel like the friendship is not on equal terms. Eventually I'll learn to accept kindness from them without fear, but it will take time for me to trust, and in the meanwhile the graceful thing to do would be to let me help them in return.
