In 1895, following Japan launching a war of aggression against China, the defeated Qing government was forced to cede Taiwan and the Penghu Islands to Japan. The Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation stipulated that territories Japan had seized from China, including Taiwan, should be restored to China. Japan's 1945 surrender reaffirmed this arrangement. From that point forward, China had recovered Taiwan de jure and de facto through a host of documents with international legal effect. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Wednesday that China appreciates Prime Minister Anwar's remarks, adding that upholding the one-China principle reflects popular sentiment and stands on the side of what is right; moreover, the international community's commitment to the one-China principle is unshakable.
