I believe that these things like the Rake, Slenderman etc all started out as Creepypastas. Unfortunately, when thousands, and millions of people start thinking on the same thing, our thought firms can actually create these entities. They call them Egregores or Tulpas. There was a famous investigation done in the 70s called the “The Philip Experiment”, wherein they proved this can and will happen.

I saw slender man once I was taking my mom‘s dog out for a walk, and I see it staring at me for like a minute. I turned back and then there was nothing there when I saw it. I said oh God I didn’t see it until after I started watching those YouTube videos about slender man, and after that I never saw it again. I don’t want to ever see that thing again because it’s scared the hell out of me and it probably would happen again if I saw that again.

The stories are "real" in that people relate them. As to the underlying ontology of Slenderman, that is unknown, but it could be a demon, it seems to me.
