@outdoorwiseliving: This is one trail behavior that I don’t understand: Leaving dog poop behind is awful. But putting it inside a plastic bag and leaving that on the trail can be even worse. Those bags don’t magically disappear after your hike. Someone else has to pick them up, wildlife can get into them, and plastic can remain in the environment long after the poop itself would have broken down. Here’s what a ‘good hearted’ dog poop bag leaver behind might say: I’m two miles from the trailhead, there’s no trash can. I don’t want a warm poop bag swinging from my backpack for the next hour. I’ll leave it beside the trail thinking, I’ll grab it on the way back. But then you forget. So here’s my proposed rule when hiking with a dog: After you bag it, you carry it. Use a smell proof container, dedicated poop bag carrier, or an exterior pack pouch you can clean afterward. Just don’t make the next hiker, ranger or me finish the job for you. Good trail etiquette includes leaving the trail better for the people and wildlife coming behind you. Mauricio LM :
i think the logic is to pick it up on the way back instead of carrying it throughout the whole hike

I always assumed people did that so that they didn’t have to carry it for the full hike and intended to get it on the way out. But maybe I’m ascribing nobler motives than exist.
