i approached a woman at the bar in NYC several years back. we got to talking and eventually i asked her what she does for work. she said she works at a restaurant & I was genuinely interested cuz i was out of town and realized it was a pretty fancy place. Messed up and said "oh that's awesome, are you a waitress there or something? what do you do?". no ill intention. just both of us a few drinks deep and i asked what her role was. biggest mistake ever. her face goes cold, and she (and her friend) immediately start making a scene at the bar, screaming at me about how DARE i assume shes a waitress. "Is that all you think women can do? what a sexist pig". my jaws on the floor flabbergasted. i apologize and say "i didnt mean it like that? i was just casually asking. what's wrong with being a waitress? especially at a fancy restaurant". she just gets angrier and angrier and makes a scene yelling at me. Worst she can say is "no" my ass. at that time i was in college and only working part time. a waitress at an upscale place in NY made way more money than i do. why would i look down on them?
