@drmaryclaire: Listen to the full unPAUSED conversation with Dr. Lucy McBride about wellness culture, the medical system, and what women actually need to support their health, at the link in bio. When did taking care of our health turn into another way for women to feel like they’re failing? More protein. More exercise. More mindfulness. More optimizing. And if you’re still struggling? The message can become that you simply haven’t done enough. Lifestyle matters. Exercise matters. Nutrition matters. But as Lucy points out, the problem is when we’re told these things are necessary AND sufficient for health. You shouldn’t have to “wellness” your way out of every health problem. And medicine isn’t off the hook either. Women have experienced plenty of shame within the medical system too. It doesn’t have to be wellness OR medical care. It can be both. #menopause #wellness #midlife #womenshealth #perimenopause
I'm so tired of managing my lifestyle choices. I'm a lifelong vegetarian, never smoked, barely drank, yet I'm constantly told that if I "cut out ____" or "add ___" it will help.

just saw a YOUNG doctor, straight out of med school who told me to try to get off my ADHD meds and that I don't need HRT if I don't have hot flashes. 😳

I have found that nurse practitioners are better at being encouraging and supportive of small changes as part of a ladder towards health. They have shamed me less therefore I have relied on them for my health care wherever possible

This is so true. I hit perio w a GP who was close to retirement/ checked out, a sadistic gyn and the major fallout happened during the pandemic. I was definitely shamed by my Dr’s and fell prey to every wellness book and charlatan w their potions for hock. Spoiler- nothing worked until I got the medical assistance and solid nutritional/ fitness advice I needed. I’m a pilates instructor who has been fit, active and proactive throughout 4 pregnancies and before. I’m grateful there is better information these days. No one should face that insanity!
