@writeonwithmissg: I tried this one year and never looked back. It was SIMPLE + SUSTAINABLE + SO MUCH FUN! This creative, unique activity is a twist on the typical “get to know your teacher” stuff many teachers do on the first day of school. But instead of telling kids about yourself, you flip it and challenge students to get to know you by “investigating” your classroom for clues! I call it “Investigate the Teacher,” and it’s the best, easiest, and most engaging first day lesson I’ve ever tried. It gets kids up and moving, interacting, noticing clues, interpreting evidence, questioning what they notice, making inferences, summarizing, and reflect. It makes them curious and excited to come back on day 2. And it builds relationships and breaks the ice better than any other back to school activities! You and your students will LOVE it.
