You didn’t ask to be left holding the emotional aftermath. But whether they come back or not, they cannot do the healing for you. Their return won’t automatically repair the trust. It won’t erase the abandonment. It won’t put every broken piece back where it was. And maybe that’s the shift: You don’t have to take responsibility for what they did. But you do have to take ownership of what happens next. Your healing belongs to you. Your nervous system. Your heart. Your boundaries. Your future. That may feel unfair because you didn’t create all of the damage. But it is also where your power is. You get to pick up the pieces. Not to become who you were before them.
